Every Shabbat, a window opens for us to hear the word of God. The ancient ordinance of reading the Haftarah enables us to continue hearing the voice of the Holy One, blessed be He, through His prophets: a voice of rebuke and consolation, spiritual strengthening, and moral guidance.
The prophets of Israel stand amid the turbulence of their times and give the present moment a meaning grounded in faith. They reveal the hand of God guiding national history within the broader course of world history. They show how dramatic events are a response to the people’s closeness to God—or their distance from Him. They sacrifice all their personal and public aspirations for one purpose alone: to bring the word of God to the nation in their own time.
In these days, when the people of Israel once again stand at the center of decisive historical events no less than in the days of the prophets, a question arises: what moral message should be applied today, in the absence of a prophet to interpret the word of God? To answer this, we must study the words of the prophets in their historical, political, military, economic, and social contexts—and ask what they would say to us if they were standing beside us at this very moment.
