In Perek Shira, the creatures of the world recite their own unique words of song. The heavens and the earth, rivers and seas, trees and birds, animals, beasts, and creeping things — all sing. Each creature offers its own song, a song that carries implications for itself and for its role in the world.
Often, in Perek Shira, one can see how a particular verse expresses not only the praise that a creature offers to the Holy One, blessed be He, but also provides insight into the life of that specific being — the nature of its suffering, its yearnings — all condensed into a single sentence, a single verse from Scripture.
With concise and flowing commentary, Rabbi Adin Even-Israel Steinsaltz opens the gates to this ancient midrashic work that describes the song of creation. The book is steeped in love for nature, animals, and plants, and in the attempt to listen — and perhaps to join — the song of the world longing for its Source.
