Kiddushin 31:B:
Rabbi Tarfon boasts of his excellence in performing the mitzvah of honoring one's mother; he goes to extreme lengths to ensure her comfort and to help with her physical needs. Yet his fellow member of the study hall point out that his mother is due DOUBLE the amount of honor than what she is currently receiving. Included in honoring is the prohibition to cause embarrassment or emotional/societal harm.
May we all be blessed to honor our own mothers to the best of our ability and to gain some inspiration from Rabbi Tarfon's attempts to give this important mitzvah its due diligence.
